Gina Rodriguez stars as Jane Villanueva in ‘Jane the Virgin’, a working, religious young Latina virgin, who becomes pregnant after being artificially inseminated by mistake.
Much like the typical telenovela (like Passions of Santos starring Jane’s father Rogelio De La Vega), Jane experiences a multitude of problems. She gets caught in a love triangle between stable cop Michael and father of her baby Rafael. As well as this her mother Xiomara begins to have feelings for her long lost TV star father, whilst following her singing dreams. As if this was not enough, Jane has to decide her future career – brave versus practical, and work out how to be a parent, if that’s what she wants.
The show is very colourful, the plot lines are somewhere between ridiculous and brilliant, and as such many people call it their ‘guilty pleasure’. I can see that, it is quite ‘chocolate box’. However, I would also argue that it is a great show to start watching – it’s lovely, the characters are hilarious and the writers are fantastic. Yes, the outward appearance is ‘guilty-pleasure-esque’ but the caramel centre is full of poignant moments, intricate narratives and …yes I’m losing myself in this metaphor I set up, but my overall point is – don’t judge it by its pink exterior.
Have a wonderful week,
P.S. Are you team Rafael…or team Michael?
