The Oscars 2018

Oscar Winners

So after a really late night the night before, I thought the best plan on the night of the Oscars was obviously to stay up late and watch live feeds. I don’t have Sky (obviously, I’m a student) so I had to rely on just looking on the internet and basically read what other people thought about things that were happening – it was like listening to a friend tell you a story but they keep missing out the bits you actually care about. If you want to look at my favourite looks – scroll down

If you want to sound like you know what’s going on in film this year – here’s my cheat sheet for the Oscars 2018:

It’s good to know the key categories:

Best Actor: Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour – and if you recognise his face then it’s probably from his performance as Sirius Black in Harry Potter – or something more ‘worthy’ I guess, but probably Potter

Best Actress: Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – a film I will never watch because I like films that have a happy resolved ending – sorry about the semi-spoiler).

Best Director: Guillermo del Toro (Shape of Water – got 2 Oscars)

Best Supporting Actress: Allison Janney (I, Tonya – everytime I see her I think of her character in ’10 Things I Hate About You’ – such a funny, wonderful actress

Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)

Best Picture: Shape Of Water

Best Original Screenplay: Jordan Peele (Get Out – horror movie, ipso facto I will never watch this movie, but some friends have mine have and say it’s really good)

The Oscar Night Itself

There are so many other awards, so to make yourself sound really good – it’s useful to have some other fun facts that are really random and specific such as:

  • The Shape of Water is the first Best Picture winner with a female lead in 13 years, the last one being Million Dollar Baby
  • Helen Mirren did shots and rode onto stage with Mark Bridges on a jet ski
  • This year there was the least number of female winners for six years
  • Lady Bird won no awards – be outraged, sprinkle a few feminist remarks and some compliments about Greta Gerwig and you’re onto a winner (they did win 2 Golden Globes though)
  • The whole ‘inclusion rider’ thing – even I’m not sure about that one
  • Kimmel (host) randomly took some actors into a local cinema
  • Frances McDormand got women to stand up during her speech (it sounds more important than I’m making it sound, watch it and it’ll make sense)
  • There’s a new Meryl Streep screaming meme (apparently that’s a thing)

I love the dresses at these award ceremonies – I would 100% wear them (round the house, at parties, all the time), although apparently they don’t get to keep them!
Unlike other award ceremonies with the important fashion black out and ‘Time’s Up’ pins. At the Oscars more people seemed to be opting for white or other pale colours – why? I really don’t know!
Here’s 4 of my favourite looks:
Lupita Nyong’o – Versace

Sandra Bullock – Louis Vuitton

Margot Robbie – Chanel
Jennifer Lawrence – Dior

Allison Williams – Armani Privé

Gal Gadot – Givenchy

Have a wonderful week,
